How to replace pinion on starter motor ?

Anyone a good Idea to remove the jump ring (red arrow) from the shaft collar ?
I compressed the spring in the hope the shaft collar would drop to allow me to remove the jump ring. The collar is loose but doesn't drop. There are also no threads on the shaft as in the workshop manual.

Those clamps look a bit precarious, you would be better off with a proper Bendix spring compressor.

It looks as if your clamps are stopping the collar from moving down, you probably need to put the whole shebang in a vice and tap the collar down with a brass drift or some such. I'm fairly sure that the proper compressor pulls the collar down as well as the spring.

Thanks for reply Bill

the shaft collar is really loose and should drop. I also tried to compress the whole thing with the collar but I don't get the jump ring out. However, I found a video and there it worked ...

I will try again
Thanks, Peter

Ok, got it off now. In my case the shaft collar had been de-formed reducing the inner diameter due to the jump ring. The reduction of diameter prevents it going over the shaft. A tap with a hammer on to a tube over the shaft collar solved the problem (then a gear puller was needed to get the collar off the shaft).

You always need to give em some encouragement with a hammer after the spring is compressed.

Knowledge like this is gradually being lost as cars continue to evolve.

What i did once i had removed the Bendix Gear was to replace the Bush in the Starter End Plate. Maybe i bought the Bush from AES or a different supplier. Well worth doing as the Bush in the Starter was worn and letting the Starter Shaft wobble.
