+2 ignition lock bracket

Investigation a smoking indicator switch has lead to full strip of the steering column to address a few minor things.

One of those things was movement/turning of the ignition lock that was messing up I the trim positioning.

On stripping it down the bracket seems to have a provision for a clamp for the lock that isn't there (see picture).

Not sure if it is messing it were never fitted from the factory?

My options seem to be fit a bracket there or drill out the bolts and refit the lock to the column.

Any other thoughts.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi all,

Allow me to put forward a worthwhile modification of the Triumph steering column supportbracket which will make life so much easier when working in this area.
I have drilled out the 2 threaded pins of the lower half of the bracket ( all the way through ) exchanging these with umbraco bolts.. Clamp is countersunk for the boltheads. ( in fact the first conversion I did was by fabricating a new lower half bracket . Later I found out the possibility modification of the std. clamp )
Upper fixation is by a bracket with fixed nuts . This arrangement will depend of the specific model.
So instead of a very slow and cumbersome tightening flat by flat of the nylocks behind the dash the work is only a Q. of minutes.

Have not tried this, but maybe the setbolts can just be pulled out ? ( instead of drilling out which requires some precision )

Thanks Mr Garde. That's an interesting idea. I am not planning on removing the column particularly frequently so probably easier just to battle the nuts with current set up for me.

I've spent quite a bit of time trying to figure this out. I've failed to find any similar clamp bracket in Triumph parts diagrams, so I think this is Elan specific. Searching on this site I've spotted a photo posted by JoB that show one end of the bracket fitted between the column clamp and bracket:

This is the same as my setup. I have also found a post that shows a S4 with column ignition with a similar but different bracket but more importantly a clamp between it and around the lock:

So my conclusion is that my car is missing the clamp around the lock and hence why it can move/rotate on the column. Therefore I need to locate/fabricate a suitable clamp.

Any one have their car apart enough to confirm this or now of a source for the clamp in the second picture?

Thanks,

Mark

Yes a clamp is required. Here?s a photo of mine during disassembly.

Thanks Dave, that confirms it! Now just to find a clamp...

To close this out. Column is back in the car with a DPO type fix. As seems bracket is late +2/Elan S4 specific chances of finding one in short turn around are very slim. So I bought a 1" pipe strap from the HW store, opened the bolt holes to 1/4", re-bent it to fit and added rubber from a different clamp. seems to do the job for now.

While the column was out it got new bushes, new horn ring and new indicator stalk. I just need to realign the column for self cancelling indicators and tighten the clamp up. While means fun battle with bad access to the u-joint between the column and steering rack....
