I suppose it matters what range you have it on....10-20V and it will swing , 0-100V less so ?

..or is it the other way round?

Correct meter for the job is a power meter, yes you do have one, it?s another fuel to temperature gauge.

Maybe the easiest way is to fit a new electronic Voltage Stabiliser (very cheap).
I suppose the old one is screwed to the back of the Speedo which means it is earthed
and vertical of course. "B" battery supply and "I" to Gauges

That job is already on my ever growing to do list. :D

(Edit: Ordered the LM2940T-10.0 for the regulator conversion as I have to pull the speedo anyway to check the low fuel bulb and wiring.)

New sender arrived from Miles and fitted. Gauge is working now, but like the fuel gauge I think it's under reading. Showing 85 C when the fan comes on. I'm going to measure the regulator output with my 'scope (for fun).

Jon,
85?c sounds good for me but a useful tool is a IR Thermometer

So... last night I thought I'd pull the underdash trim and take a look at the regulator, as a new electronic part had arrived in the post. I found that it is not attached to the back of the speedo or rev counter, but instead it is screwed onto the back of the dashboard, on the right hand side but not accessible. It has its own dedicated ground wire, too. Unfortunately I could not get to it, or pull the wires off it (I was going to wire the electronic part in temporarily to see if it made any difference), there is not enough clearance back there.

What I did notice was that the dashboard loom looks suspiciously clean for a 45 year old car.. so it may have been replaced when the car was restored in the early '90s. Maybe!

I also checked the fuel warning light. I was unsurprised to discover a missing bulb. As I don't have a spare I left it, but I'll be revisiting it very soon.

And I have fixed it - just a new bulb for a quid - and tested by grounding out the sensor wire. Just hope the sensor itself is working, will find out tomorrow on the way to Goodwood I suppose.
