Lotus Elan

Electronic Tachos & Speedos

PostPost by: Foxie » Mon Apr 02, 2018 11:30 am

I've had a query on fitting an electronic speedo which I mentioned in a recent post, so I thought I'd put the info up here.

I had my original speedo and tacho converted to electronic operation by Speedy Cables near Swansea [email protected]" target="_blank

I have also recently been in contact with Caerbont Automotive Instruments also in the same area http://www.caigauge.com They have taken over manufacture of Smiths Instruments.

They can supply full replicas of the Smiths speedo and tacho as originally fitted to the Elan, including all the warning lights.

The advantages are that the angle drive and cable, with all their associated problems are eliminated, the speedo can be precisely calibrated, and the needle does not swing.

I have attached pic of the the pick-up mounting on the diff of my plus 2, and the pick-up which counts the rotations of the diff output CVJ. The mounting is simply glued to the diff flange.

I tried twice last year to contact Speedy Cables but there was no reply at all to two e-mails...

I contacted Caerbont directly and they were very helpful and I bought a complete set of gauges from them directly. It is also possible (it involves a supplement) for them to build customer specific gauges.

Neil Meakin was my contact: [email protected] whose numbers are shown below:

Factory +44 (0)1639 732204
Office +44 (0)1639 732281

I must say I was very impressed by the gauges I bought, although I have not yet fitted them as my project is advancing rather slowly. I have also opted for the electronic solutions having read up the threads on the Forum about poor senders, cables etc.
