Hi all,

I know this is probably a noob question - but -

I am fitting an oil temp gauge the question is where do I attach the oil temp sender unit?

Many thanks,

A typical approach is to use a sump plug that accepts the sender.

The only problem with that the wiring could be easily damaged?, Especially if you live in an area with speed bumps..
How about a Tee with the oil pressure sender ?

I'm not sure that taking a temperature at a point of no flow will really tell you what you want.
There must be a plug into an oilway with moving oil passing that could accept a sender?
Or with more work put a sensor through the side of the sump.

Cymru,

How about fitting an oil cooler sandwich plate betwee the oil pump and oil filter, then using one of the tapping points for your temperature sender, and blank off the other tapping point.

This could be the best solution, the are at least two drillings into the oil gallery on the distributor side of the cylinder block that might be used. The key here is to have the sensing end of the temperature sender just barely protrude into the gallery to give minimal blockage to flow. I would look at using the 1/4 NPT port where the oil pressure sender is mounted. I would see if something could be worked out with a tee or cross fitting that would accept both the temperature and pressure senders. The pressure sender does not need to be in direct contact with flowing oil.

Just a thought, the oil does a lot of cooling as well as lubricating so it will not be the same temperature at all points. You would want the average and that means the sump only or possibly the filter.
