Headlamp solenoid location

Hi, I?m doing a slight mod to add a solenoid to operate the headlights rather than have the piping back to the dashboard switch. I plan to retain my non failsafe operation. My question is, where should the solenoid be located. Is it in the same place for both non failsafe and failsafe systems. I?m just completing the wiring under the bonnet and this is one of the last items to do. I was thinking of going to MX5 motors and even bought a pair, but have decided to stay more original. The solenoid has three ports, one to the front cross member, one to the headlight pods and one for venting, what have people put on the venting port to stop muck and spiders getting in there?

I purchased a screened vent plug to keep the solenoid vent from sucking in foreign material:

As far as the solenoid location is concerned, the failsafe cars had it on the nearside wing just in front of the air deflector plate. I didn't know the non-failsafe ones had a solenoid, I assumed the valve/light/dashboard switch did the solenoid duties...

The solenoid on my 72 Plus2 was located on the front side of the mounting plate for the radiator on the left side. Just below and opposite of the upper radiator water inlet. I used the wire that powers the solenoid to operate the relay for my Miata headlight motor.
