I am unable to access my car to check this. Would a 1967 S3 Elan have one or two wires to connect the horn button?

Chris,
just one wire, shown as Purple/ Black on the circuit diagram. The horn button connects it to earth via the steering column.

If you have the original connection between the steering shaft and the steering rack, you will need an electrical strap between the two in order for the horn button to connect to ground. A solid universal does not need the strap.
