Door speaker positioning in +2.

The sound from the Pioneer rear parcel speakers in my +2 fails to satisy, and I feel I'll get a better balanced sound by adding a pair of speakers to the bottom front corner of the doors.

Whilst tinkering with something else last night, I removed the driver's door card and realised the window motors are in the way of where I'd mentally planned the speakers. They would have to be set back a good foot or so, which I estimate is on a level with my knees, just in front of the grab handles.

Is this the usual place for +2 door speakers, and does it poise any clearance problems with the window mechanism? I Googled +2 door cards and door speakers and came up with no images.

Thanks chaps.

On my early +2, there were door speakers in place of the ashtrays. I can post up some photos at a later date. This probably doesn't help you much as the mechanism for opening the door is different to the later cars
an example at this link.....

I also found this later car, in case it helps

I put some huge speakers in.......between the underside of the rear seat squab and the floor......
I made a board which fitted the recess and then got shallow depth speakers.......
140watt......very loud........had them in for about 6 months then took them out as Id rather listen to the engine and enjoy the driving......

It would seem a real shame to do this. I personally dislike seeing door speakers on a Plus 2 and had new door cards made on mine to get rid of them

I installed rear parcel shelf speakers when I rebuilt the car but have never used them or fitted a radio. As already said the sound of the TC on chat is sufficient aural pleasure for me :D

However I will see if I can dig out photos of the door shells - I seem to recall they had been hacked out to accept speakers.

Thanks everyone.

Last night I took a second look with a measuring stick. The electric winder motors are recessed approx 42 mm into the doors, less the depth of the door cards in the carpeted area. Most 10cm speakers appear to have a depth of approx 44mm, so there is a possibility there may be potential space to fit a pair without making any (or possibly minor) alterations to the doors themselves - door cards can always be easily replaced.

I have ordered a pair of Pioneer speakers to match the rest of the system and over the weekend I'll have a dabble and report back.

Cheers

Mark.

Very neat, very minimalist. Mine's more Picasso at the moment.

I mounted large speakers (6 x 9 IIRC) in the outside walls of the footwell. In the Plus 2 there is plenty of depth in this area. A plenum is formed by the rocker member closing panels; you can open up the panels and check it out. I like this spot as it would be easily reversible with a couple of pieces of carpet and relatively crude fibreglass patch or screwed in place closure plates (if you ever want to remove the speakers).
