Plus 2 wiper arc

Just had delivery of a new wiper motor and rack to replace the recently burnt out one ( on test ! ). The new gearbox is marked as 155 degs. The old one is 125 degs, and appeared to give a good sweep.
Any advice before I start dismantling gearboxes ?

You may need to swap the gears around (if they fit) because the higher figure will give a wider sweep of the wipers which may not be desirable.
If you do try the new unit as it is then do so without the wiper blades fitted to check the arc and to avoid paintwork damage etc

The new motor, marked "155 degs" with a black marker, actually turned out to have a 100 deg arc ! There was no marking on the gear wheel.
So the gear wheel from the old motor, stamped 125 degs has been fitted to the new motor.
Also re-learned that the park position (left or right) can be set by rotating the plastic gear wheel drive pegs 180 degs relative to the steel drive disk.
The cause of all the problems appears to be a dodgy wiper switch (47 years old), now being replaced.

Dodgy wiper switch?, would that be the Dash switch or the self park switch?

The problem was the dash switch. Sometimes it would work, other times it wouldn't, and it could come and go if jiggled.
I removed it and opened it up, and there was no obvious damage or burning. Pic attached. Looking at it I still couldn't figure out how the middle (slow speed) connections were made, and a net search failed to bring up any more detail, although some diagrams showed another type switch being used, Switch 020.254
Anyway, a new one on the way from Paul Matty.

I had another look in daylight, I see how it works, and it's very clever ! ! The two rocking contact bars are asymmetrical, and mounted in opposite directions. When the double plungers are over the bottom or 'off' contacts, they are connected through the middle 'bridge' contacts. When the switch is moved to mid or 'low' one bar stays in the same position, but the other one rocks over, connecting low speed terminal to the powered contact, i.e. lower left to top right. When the switch is moved to 'high' the second bar rocks over, connecting the top two contacts through the bridge.
Quite simple really

A good seven hours work all you have to do now is clean them and fit it back together...

I want to reverse the park position in my sprint so am interested in the components that need to be reversed
You don't happen to have a photo of them per chance please?
Many thanks
Gavin
Hi Gavin,
You will need to remove the motor, undo the gearbox cover, remove the crank arm, carefully remove the circlip from the rear of the gear shaft (very tricky, it breaks easily) and withdraw the gear and shaft. Carefully wedge the plastic gear from the drive flange, rotate it 180 degs, and re-engage it with the square drive pegs. Reassemble.
You may need to fit wiper arms with reverse crank to park parallel to windscreen bottom.

'll keep an eye out for you on the roads I'm over your way the week after next
You'll probably need your wipers if you're coming over this way, although it's not so bad here in the Sunny South East
Which way are you headed, I'm just south of New Ross, on the way to Hook Head.

Sadly I'm not in the Elan - there are 4 of us pottering around Ireland.
We'll be staying at Waterford on the 19th as part of an ambitious itinerary......
Take your point on the wipers - we'll be bringing waterproofs (not just for Waterford)
Gavin
