Wiperbox mounting

I am in the process of installing the wipers in my S3. I have seen reference to a wiperbox bushing that slides over the wiperbox shaft and is located inside the car. I assume it acts like a spacer to hold everything tight when you tighten up the mounting nut against the chrome mounting bezel. I don't remember the car having these. Are they supposed to be there? They make sense, I'm just not sure if I need them or not.
Thanks,
Rick

There should be a nylon/plastic sleeve/spacer that slides over the shaft as you describe, the top is cut at an angle to match that of the chrome bezel so when tightened up it holds the wheel box tight & at the correct angle in relation to the scuttle. I have known them to become brittle & fall apart when old, so they could have fallen off when you dismantled them.
