Hallo !!!
Did anybody list the relays that are fitted in the headlight circuit of the ELAN S4
From this diagram

diagram-relay-headlight.jpg and

I understand that there are:
1. M-headlight relay
2. D-headlight relay
3. Headlight flasher relay
4. Headlamp flasher unit
5. Headlamp microswitch
I've surfed many times the http://www.autoelectricalspares.co.uk, but I have none of the Lucas code to buy them with at least a little possibility to get them correctly.
I've bought the car in pieces, now I'm trying to reassemble it therefore I have no clue how they could be.
I could solve the problem easly buying common relays at the corner shop, but I'm sure that the first time I'll open the bonnet for a Lotus's enthusiast , he will peek me simply horrified :x by that damn relays that are not in their proper tin can as 40 years ago!

thanks for your help!

Ciao da bella Italia ... but with no Lucas Relays

#1-3 are all Lucas 6RA relays, You can use Lucas 4 terminal SRB111/113 for #1 & 2; #3 should be a 3 terminal Lucas 6RA #33232 but they are very hard to find. But you can use a 3rd SRB111/113 & bridge 2 terminals.

#4 is a simple Lucas FL5

The headlight microswitch I believe is just another door interior light switch?

Ciao

Phariso!
thank you very much!
Now it's clear.

Does the Headlamp microswitch lift up the front light pods wen flashing or switching on the switch of the front light?
... or just a switch that can detect if the pods are fully up position?

ciao!
Paolo

On my 67 S3 coupe, one headlamp microswitch ensured that the headlight bulbs are OFF when the lights are retracted, the other switch activated the headlight flasher circuit (if the headlights are not switched on by their dashboard switch). My flasher circuit is long gone.

Both switches activate very early in the swing-up process.

To be clear, the headlight flash arrangement was that if you lift the headlights (using the dashboard vacuum pull switch) while the headlights/dippedlights are switched OFF on the dash, then and only then do they flash at about 1 second (?) period.

I understand that this has been ruled against in the UK as it is treated as pretending to be a Police car, so if you car has this circuit fitted you should not use it in the UK. I don't think it is actually illegal (though it might be), just heavily frowned-upon.

thank you men!
....as my little son uses to thank the attendant at the exit of the carousell

one more question:
what about replacing all that funny tin can relays with some modern German-made ones that are waterproof and compact ?

.... or a wonderful sealed box with mini-relays and a lot of fun to wire them?

Ciao
Paolo

I think you summed it up in your initial question:

"I could solve the problem easly buying common relays at the corner shop, but I'm sure that the first time I'll open the bonnet for a Lotus's enthusiast , he will peek me simply horrified :x by that damn relays that are not in their proper tin can as 40 years ago!"
