wiring to starter solenoid

Due to various personal commitments, after a long delay I'm finally getting onto my rebuild and have come across a query. (1971 plus 2/130s)

Into my solenoid I have a white and red wire which pushes onto one side, and with it coming from the loom under the carbs, is a ring connector with 2 small earths which I am sure was fixed to the bracket which secures the solenoid starter (later version) to the bulkhead.

Both fixing bolts locate onto the fibreglass secured by nylocs from the inside. What I don't understand is why the earths go here?? There is no chassis or frame work supporting these fixings behind the dash so I'm worried that the earth will not work. Are these 2 wires in loop or should the fixing have a trailing earth from the bolt to an earth behind the dash.

I hope I've explained myself ok?

I'm guessing that one of the earths is an earth itself, and was attached to the solenoid so that the solenoid would work. The other is who knows what?
I suggest you test to see if one of them is in fact a lead to earth.

Hi Roger

I agree...my only conclusion was that it was infact an earth buy why loop it?... also, the fixing that it attaches to is the mounting bracket and it does not act as earth to make it work. I tried continuity testing the mounting and the earth side of the solenoid but there is no signal.

Hi

Roger is correct the casing of the solenoid is part of the circuit

Trace the other to locate it and its use

I mean that the other end of one of the wires is connected to earth. The second wire is for something else needing an earth.

Maybe to the coil, which also needs to be earthed.
