Hi,
I am currently rebuilding my +2 130/5 and I am ready to start the engine, which is a 1700 tall block. Upon attempting to start, with a new battery the starter turns the engine slowly for a couple of seconds then slows to a stop. I have jumped the battery to the starter side of the solenoid, with the earth directly to the engine, thus eliminating any possible earth problems. The starter is a new inertia type with a 9 tooth pinion.
Has anyone overcome a similar problem?

Assuming the battery's well charged and the engine turns freely by hand, I would say you have a bad starter motor. If, like me, your 1700 has 10.5 compression and a fair amount of spark advance I think you are better off with a modern high torque starter. Transformed starting for me.

I seem to remember that the old Joe Lucas starter motors have 4 brushes,if one of them has worn down/stuck you'd be reduced to half power,might be worth having a look..

Thanks for the replies. It appears the 'new' starter motor was semi duff. I found an old Lucas unit under the bench and swopped over the pinion and mounting flange and immediate vast improvement. Now I've just got to get the old girl started. Fire extinguisher at the ready!!
