Hi,
Can anyone tell me what drive gear was used on a 1965 Elan S2 DR3A wiper motor. I have two motors. One has a 140 degree and the other has a 130 degree gear.

Does anyone know?

Thanks

Mike

In the absence of anyone piping up with the definitive answer I've taken a protractor to the S4 Elan. I did two calculations to look at th sweep of the arm and then the blade. They came out at just under 110 degrees, then 115 degrees. This was on a dry screen.

To confuse matters I've asked a chap who rebuilds them and has access to the specs. He says a 75501A has a sweep of 130 degrees. He's probably more reliable than my protractor.

The Robinshaw & Ross book lists part numbers 75442A & 75501A for S1 & S2 cars & Later S2 & S3 cars respectively. It also mentions under 'Other applications' Austin 1100/1300. I've been looking into this myself as I have a friends S3 in my workshop for restoration & he had no wiper motor. I found a DR3A, pt # 75442A which is listed for BMC ADO16 range (1100/1300's) & does indeed have a 130 degree wheel which seems to give about the right sweep on the screen. Another alternative that had been suggested to me was Triumph TR4 but I don't know what degree or pt # they are.

Hi,

I'm in the thick of this at the moment as I've a burnt out DR3A in an early S1 that I have to replace, it has a 150 degree gear which I was surprised to see, I'm was expecting something like 130 degree.

The Austin 1100/1300 are single speed, and may not have park, the TR4A had a option to fit two speed wiper motor which is the DR3A, they are identified by the connection wires coming out of the body instead of connectors in the alloy back. If three connectors they are one speed.

I'm liaising with a guy in the US to try and source correct part, they are rare.

I will check the gear in the wiper motor out of my Series 2 26R tomorrow, which is definitely original and still looks like new!

Cheers

Vaughan

Try a guy called Steve Hunt on eBay, he sells obsolete Lucas parts, is very knowledgeable and a nice helpful person as well.

Vaughan,
I'm dealing with this guy on ebay: alanjohnturner
What he doesn't know about DR3A's probably isn't worth knowing.
As I have an original variable switch he's going to rewire a DR3A to accept the rheostat control, make it 130 sweep and add a thermal cut out.
He's been extremely patient with my procrastinations. If you can't find him I'll forward his email if you wish.
Steve Hunt also seems to deal a lot in these.

Hi Graeme,

I've not found him yet. I've been in contact with a guy called Max on eBay who has numerous wiper motors for sale, he's asked for lots of details but has gone a bit quiet. Would you mind forwarding me his details, my email is [email protected]
