Lucas horn revitalization

At the risk of offending the modders here, I'll ask the crowd who has revitalized an oem Lucas horn? The one shown (stripped of paint) simply goes 'clunk' when power is applied. I've taken the little bolt on top up and down with no change. I've removed the big bolt on top, sprayed WD40 down the hole, sprayed WD40 into the snout but it still simply goes 'clunk'.

I see two options: Soaking the whole thing in some sort of fluid to loosen up the innards or grind down the rivets holding the halves together to be able to split it apart to fix it.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Greg Z

Hi Greg,

Check the battery you are using is fully charged. I have car with the same horn and it only works when the engine is running, and revving above 1500 rpm. With the engine switched of it clunks.

Good point: I forgot to mention that when I applied power to the horn, it was a direct connection to a fully charged battery.

I would suggest you do as John has suggested, drill the rivets and then follow the instructions as per this link

I have restored several sets of horns. They look and work just fine.

Hi all

After 50 years of putting up with the useless and inadequate horseless carraige hooter I replaced them with a compact air horn assembly, the small (5 in. cube) that incorperates the compressor, horn and relay in a nice unobtrusive package. The first advantage is there is no lag in operation that I found occurred with spooling up of the normal piped together systems - AND - they are loud! - Cheap as well.

Remember what Mr. Lucas always said - don't go out after dark!!

To my mind an acceptable upgrade for 26/0538

Mr. Lucas ---------------------------- don?t go out at night: he didn?t even consider our pop-ups -- he lives in klosters switzerland where i have met him skiing, going uphill (t-bar) and tlaking about loti and other LESS IMPORTANT british brands - a real nice chap: about 85, but goin strong sandy, hardly any lucas parts!

If it just goues CLUNK, the assumption is that the contacts are not openning inside.

Check this by connecting it through the 10 Amps range of a multimeter

I wrote a description of fixing it here but the URL quoted above:
http://www.sabutler.com/tr6hornrepair.asp
is much better, so I removed mine.

~~~~~~~
You would only want to actuall try to fix this if you are mad keen on originallity, because more or less the same types of horn are readily available nowadays.
I read the writeup posted for the TR6 horn and this is the route I'm going. A bit too much going on now with the holiday season so I'll tackle this early next year. Do you realize 'next year' is only a few weeks away?
There is always the good preproduction part route:
Russ, I wonder if Holden's part is metal (like the original part) or a cheap plastic re-production?
