EXCEL 2007 started using XLSX format files. Those of us with with the newer EXCEL can save spreadsheets in the older XLS format using the SaveAs command and selecting the format of file in which to save.
It is always safer to save and distribute files in the older format since a substantial percentage of users still use versions of Office that do not support the newer format.

There is an extension package downloadble free from the Microsoft website which enables older versions of Ms Office to read all the newer versions of the files.
I will try find its name, & link, it is something like fileformatconverters.exe
.....
Here you go:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download ... .aspx?id=3
I've used it for many customers, when I used to do IT support, it works well.

Oh if only the whole world was Mac

Ah, if only life were that simple.
This is an issue of file format compatibility across multiple generations of software development, and it affects Windows and Apple software equally.
Speaking as a software developer who faced this problem, it requires the commitment from senior management down to the coder to develop multiple generations of software with multiple improvements that functions as well with the first generation users as well as with the latest users using the latest bells and whistles.
Most large software publishers do not do this, and MS and Apple are only two examples of very poor behavior. Most companies feel no qualms publishing new generation software that is wildly incompatible with previous generations taking the position "adapt you fool".
Just my rant for the day.

The switch of main concern is Number 5 which has no difference in continuity between up and mid position!

Ah, alas that FileFormatConverter might not be available for Macintosh Office.

Microsoft and Apple are In my opinion quite good at maintaining back compatibility. The convertor program above is an example of good behavior by MS.
Apple are a bit less so, but they have made mighty changes in internal achitecture, switching from 68000 CPU type to Intel type so some incompatibillities were inevitable. As in Lilliput, there was I think a difference in big-endian to little-endian (or vice versa) there.

Actually I agree to some extent Mac were the little guy with a Hippy against big business. Now they have turned into an evil empire.
When an Apple shop took over 200 pound off me for a repair that did not work, and when I brought it back and they told me it was now a "Classic Mac" and was no longer supported! The shop manager and I had a very unhappy conversation.

Interesting. An example of exponential complication of technological progress. This started as a simple question about 1960's technology, a simple single binary switch function, now were on to AI!!!!
