ignition switch loose

I have to replace the ignition switch. The dash thickness prevents me from using the backside hex nut. I get enough of the threaded shaft to protrude so I can attach the bezel. The problem is the bezel loosens and the switch will turn.

To remedy this, I put some locktite on the bezel threads and all was well until now. I could not remove the bezel. I had to remove the lock tumbler and cut the bezel with a dremel from the inside of the switch. Good thing I am replacing the switch.

Hoping not to have to use locktite. Any suggestions?

I believe that the dash should have been countersunk from the backside so I could use a lock washer and back nut. Too late for that now.

Bob, the ignition switch uses a sort of sandpaper washer to keep it from rotating. IIRC it has the rough surface on both sides. Perhaps you could try making one up by gluing two pieces of sandpaper together. I think the sandpaper washer came with my replacement ignition switch, but can't recall.

To tighten the bezel nut I made up a tool from a large fender washer. Just cut out a piece of the washer to make a U shaped tool that tightened the nut.

Similar washers are used on the door lock barrels as well.

My s3 uses a metal plate to locate both the wiper/washer switch and the ignition switch. The hole for the latter has a flat section (so it's "D" shaped) to stop the switch turning. Have tried to show in pic below, taken from behind dash....easy when it's on the dining room table!

My ignition switch came with a wavy thin metal lock washer. I assume that in a metal dash with the proper "D" shaped cut out that will work well.

I like the D shape metal plate. I think I will make one and fasten it to the rear of the dash. With very limited space that would require epoxy and a prayer.
