Bargain alternator - corrected

The dynamo on my S4 is on the blink and I am encouraged by the positive comments about a swap to an alternator. Has anyone experience of these ?99 units? Obviously a big bargain, the guy claims they bolt straight in without any bracketry mods. It sounds just what I need but then again....

Any advice much appreciated?

All the Lotus Cortina models are listed so it should fit and the seller rating is high. Otherwise there is a lack of information e.g. polarity, but you are protected under Trades Description I imagine. Let us know how you get on! Wilkins can source a dynamo much cheaper, though.

Thanks guys,

The company is local to me so I shall drive over with my old dyno and see how the new one measures up. I will let you know how I get on once I have installed and wired it up.

Well, I now have a shiny new ?99 dynamator. Looks a cinch to connect up, but as the spec says, the output shaft is 15mm while the pulley and fan from the original dynamo are just 14.5 mm. As I don't have a 15mm drill to hand but I do have a round file, I may ease the holes a touch.

Progress, of sorts. The new "dynamator" doesn't align with the mounting on the block. Dynamator is 144mm between lugs, bracket is 155mm.

So my plan for a quick, painless swap is shot to pieces...

Doesn't sound like a big obstacle....just needs a 1cm spacer for the rear bolt, yes?

Peter,

Keen to get your verdict on this product. Any progress since? Have you tried fitting the pulley?

Having read this, I also bought a dynamator. Whilst I have not started it up yet because I still need to convert to negative earth the bracket and shaft both seemed to fit perfectly. My elan is a 1969 s4 but the rear lights and wiring are s3

Hi

this info might be out of date now but I bought a 18ACR from the Liverpool branch of Lucas for ?30 brand new about 4 years ago.

The guy who sold it to me said they had hundreds in stock simply because they were too small an output for modern cars.

Might be worth trying to ring lucas direct- the Liverpool branch no longer exists unfortunately.

John

The above message is a bit old now so my comment might be too late for this instance, but surely the rear mounting hole in the device is not actually intended to be tight against the rear hole of the bracket on the block(that could crack the alloy mouldings of the dynamo/alternator.). On mine (which is now an alternator) the rear hole of the alternator is a tight but sliding fit on a sleeve which is held by a bolt to the rear mounting hole on the bracket.

So the fix, if needed, is a longer sleeve and bolt, NOT a spacer as such.

Revised to clarify the the hole referred to is the rear hole in the bracket.

The fit to mounting bracket would appear to match the Lucas C40 rather than the C40L (as fitted to the +2 and later Elans). The C40L is 154mm between lugs while this particular Dynamator is matched to the C40 lug distance of 144mm.

The vendor does clearly specify C39 and C40. Other vendors (eg Powerlite) do offer a C40L version but for a lot more money! Distance from rear of front mounting lug to centre of pulley V groove (after you find and fit a pulley) should be 35mm. See http://www.ccw-tools.com/Alternators-&-Dynamos/DYNATORS/LMDC40L---Lucas-C40L-type-long-type-Replacement-Dynamo/p-600-1409-36760/

I've bought one expecting I'd have to shorten the bracket. It is quite a bit "fatter" than the dynamo, and the field connection is on the side of the body, so it's not as good a fake dynamo as I'd hoped. :D Also thinking that parts will be harder to source than a stock denso or acr.

But that's all the usual fretting, I know I'll be happy the first time I hit the indicator after fitting ;-)

Like I said, I do not think you need to shorten the bracket, you just need a longer sleeve and corresponding longer bolt, in the rear hole of the bracket.
