ambient temperature gauge

Just about to refit the ambient temperature gauge to my 1973 +2S130 dash. What is the thread on the thumb nut that holds the single U clamp that secures the gauge to the dash. It does not seem to be 4BA and a 10-32UNF seems to slide over while a 8-32UNF seems to bind up after a couple of threads.
