Can anyone tell me what this switch is for, it doesn't seem to do anything but appears original and the same type as the "security switch" in the glove box. It is located on the bracket of the bonnet pull as shown in the photo's. my car is an early series 4 from 1968, uk spec.

Cheers, i think your right although the wiring is wrong colour in loom, but it appears to be going to the right area. i would never have found the switch with the lower shroud in place, what more surprises lay in wait as i take bits apart!!

If the car is a coupe and has a rear screen demister option, this is where the switch was placed.

Here is a photo of my bonnet pull and switch from the 1970 RHD Coupe that has been converted to LHD.

My 70 Coupe has the red switch in the A pillar below the eye-ball vent, there is no definite true statement when you talk about the Elan and its changes, the best price always won out over all else!

We just searched this out as our Sprint Coupe had the heated window but we could not find the switch that had been removed, the Green and yellow wiring was in the vicinity, the switch location was confirmed speaking to Coupe owners at this years Silverstone Classic.

My car is an original dhc, with all matching numbers. At present i can't find the relay for the hazards so if its for heated rear window this leaves me further puzzled. More digging for wires and testing to come i feel!

The wire from the hazard switch to the hazard flasher are light green and light green yellow to the hazard warning lamp.

Wiring to the rear screen heater switch is green, and to the rear screen heater is black with white tracer. well at least that is what the diagram in the manual reads.


Lotus did use mostly standard Lucas colors, the rear screen may not be one but the wire is a black with white tracer to the rear screen.

the hazards are a standard Lucas color code.

Lucas Wiring Color Codes

Many British designed vehicles use colour coded cables to assist in identifying the various circuits in use. This is an extract from BS-AU7a 1983 Colour Code for Vehicle Wiring, from the British Standards Institution, 2 Park St., London W1A 2BS.

(Note that these colour codes may not apply directly to older cars. For example, the wipers on cars up to 1980 (at least) are not on a separate fuse circuit, so they are not orange, but green. Check the schematic for your car to be certain. - cak)

There's no hazard warning lamp on the dashboard

Umm, I have a late '67 Elan (45/7279) built in July/Aug '67, titled in March '68. It has a pull type hazard flasher switch under the far left side of the dash. I believe hazard lights were required for the US in '68.

Thanks for the diagrams for the hazard circuit duly noted and to be actioned over the next few days. I'll feel safer with one (despite being a '68 S4) as where I broke down when I collected the S4 one would have been very useful.
