Does anyone have any experience with electric aerials?

I need 2 aerials and was thinking about installing electric aerials, but my only experience in the past was of one that was cheap and noisy.

Are there any issues with Positive earth?

I like the idea of symmetry but why two? Are you going to fit twin exhaust pipes?

Maybe for headlight pop-ups?

I had an electric aerial & swapped it over a couple of cars. Whilst cheap and noisy it worked well enough as long as mast was cleaned & lubed frequently.

I discounted it for the Elan though: 1.0 Intrusion into the boot space 2.0 Need to anchor (where? how?) the mechanism (quite a lump!) to avoid stress cracking around the mounting hole.

I have an electric aerial on the S2 (although I took the radio out a while ago...bit of a waste of time IMHO) it is noisy which is no big deal and at least you know its going up or down
At the moment I have the two way switch connected to an in line electric fuel pump to fill the carbs after the car has stood for a long time......couldn't be bothered to fit an other switch for the pump.
The aerial still goes up and down while the pump ticks away

I am wondering about aerials and the fact that they are fragile, can break ( or be broken ) off, or produce stress cracks, and consume boot space. like most of the other posters comment My car is a +2S so I have been wondering about using one or more of the headlining rods as an aerial ( could have 5 aerials then!) this could also be done on a fixed head which I assume has a similar method of holding the headlining.

The idea should work because of the fibre glass body. On the drop heads it would be possible to put some exposed wire or copper tape on the inside of doors or the underside of the boot--not the bonnet would pick up the ignition noise.

will try some of the ideas when I get to that stage in my rebuild Dont think I would rip out the headlining to try it but as mine is striped out will have a go later on and report how it works-- unless someone has tried it and can comment on it.

Hi Simon,
I assume you mean electrically 'noisy' rather than mechanically noisy when raising and lowering.

I've had an electrical aerial on my +" and it works excellently, make sure it's earthed properly. From memory of many years ago, there were aerials made down to a price and some of good quality!

I recently bought a nice aerial from carmastsuk (or something like that) who also sell on eBay. They also have replacement masts if you have an accident. Mine is switched by the ignition feed to the radio - +ve 12V - something to ask about if you go that route.
