S1 boot light protectors

PostPost by: Tahoe » Fri Aug 24, 2012 3:23 pm

I know these are available from the 26 Register, but if anyone could sketch the dimensions for me and sheet metal thickness I would appreciate it. These would be the trapazoid shaped ones. I was just going to make a pair up so the lights and wires stay protected. I could make up my own to fit but want to try and replicate the original ones.

It's amazing how minor things can be an important issue, I also had the wires and globes
"messed with" by my photography gear moving around in the boot while having
a "pleasant" Sunday morning drive in the Alps one summer.

So decided to make up some aluminium brackets as shown in the pics, no need to
give measurements as you simply take them on the topmost light mounting studs.

After fitting the brackets... end of problem.
Don't get to fancy with the design, as you will still need to get at the globes, and
don't make the bracket to wide for same reason.... I never new that orig protectors
were ever used, but anyway this does work.

I didn't know those existed! Did S3s and S4s have those?

Hi Andy
The S3 and S4 used the cardboard trim finish piece to do the job.

That's interesting Gary. My Plus 2 originally used a similar cardboard deal. I ended up just covering the lights with carpet and the soundproofing felt as the cardboard was pretty far gone. I think I will try something similar to Col's item, although I haven't had any issues with the carpet covering.

Gary,

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou for the pictures with dimensions.

I'll make up a pair, and if they look and function good I'd be willing to make others for those interested.

As a side note my cast oil pan project I believe is dead. Too much money needed to invest in a project that few are truely interested in.

Here's a protector in situ on my S1

As an aside - has the inside of your boot been painted?

Mine has never been painted and never will be painted

Hi Rod

Unpainted inner boots may therefore be fairly common!

The Type26 Register states that they should be either grey or black - so an edit is required!

Gary, Many thanks. I didn't know that such a piece existed! How is it held on?

35 years of Elan ownership, and there is still so much I don't know.

Best regards,

Andy

Andy,

The **millboard ** doesn't offer much protection. However, my '67 S3 has a couple of narrow steel brackets (which I can't locate at present! ) and the millboard is held onto them by self tapping screws that go into spire nuts. Here's an "artists" impression

Hopefully someone can provide dimensions for the bracket.

kind of bent and then straightened incorrectly.JPG and

Dimensions should be 3.75 inch by 1.5 inch by 1/2 inch, I straightened the bracket incorrectly :) and the next two pictures show how the brackets should look.

Gary,

Do both the S3 & S4 rear light units have same spacing of fixings (and therefore use same brackets)?
