Hi All,
I have had the issue of no spark on my elan which i am currently rebuilding.
The car is an S3 with positive earth
I have tried my electronic ignition but did not get a spark
So removed it and fitted a new points and condenser
still no spark
I have the white wire from the loom going to the + on the coil
and the wire from the points going to the -
I have a new lucas gold coil fitted
checked resistance in ohms through the coil and (+ and HT exit) and get around 18,000 ohms resistance
can some one PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!!!
I now have no idea what is wrong and not enough experience to resolve the issue.
If some one from the north west of england is willing to pay me a visit in there elan and help out it would be most appreciated.
thanks

Where abouts are you? I'm in Halifax, don't know if you are close? PM me if you want.
Work back from the plugs, I would. Have you got power to the coil? If yes, (and assuming the new coil isn't duff) then it must be dizzy. If no, then move towards the ignition switch. You need a wiring diagramme in hand, together with your multi-meter - the only way to track it down. I'll have a look at the wiring diagramme tonight and mail again.

hello, Where are you?
If yours is positive earth then the white wire from the tacho should go to the negative terminal of the coil, and the contact breaker wire connected to the positive.
This though would only produce a weaker spark, not no spark at all.
I have recently had a faulty ignition switch. To prove this I `hot wired` from the live side of the starter solenoid, through a fuse, to the coil, bypassing the switch and tacho.
I have just tested my coil. Secondary resistance is 8850 ohms, primary(positive to negative) 4 ohms.
Hope this helps.

Hope this helps

Don't forget the very silly things like...
Is there an earth strap from block to chassis at the lhs engine mount?
Did you put the rotor back in the dizzy when you put the points in?
Is there a carbon center pin inside your dizzy cap (it can snap off)?
Not that any of these have happened to me

Check the anti-theft switch........if it hasn't already been bypassed.

Sorry Gazza, I didn't realise that the S3 did not have the anti-theft switch. If your loom did include the wires for it there would be 4 ..... 2 white (ignition circuit), 1 purple/back and 1 black (horn circuit)

St Helens isn't all that far away,I'm a bit busy with the move at the moment but would be quite willing to have a drive over and give you some assistance if you can't sort it in the next few days...
