I don't think the location of the coil pack is that critical - but out of sight would be good as they aren't very attractive. The edis module inside the car is a good idea, so you can connect a laptop for mapping. Some info here http://www.kewengineering.co.uk/upgrade ... erview.htm
Unfortunately Matt Kimmins has stopped making his kits but I have a 4 cylinder kit (and an 8 cylinder kit, which I don't need now) on the shelf, waiting for the time to fit. Was going to fit it to my mini, but might do the +2 instead. Fitted one to my MGB a few years ago, and it made a huge difference. Anybody have a good map for a twin cam ?

Thanks guys,

After some deliberation I have mounted the coil pack on the bulkhead. It does look ugly but what swayed me was Richard's valid point re keeping electric's away from under the carbs. I had forgotten that one of the major selling points of a DIS was getting rid of the coil and dizzy sitting directly below those leaky carbs. I am totally paranoid about my pride and joy going up in smoke and figure an ugly coil pack is a small price to pay for reducing the risk further. It will be nice to know there are no ignition sources below the carbs now and no dizzy to service.

I think I will also take Brian's advice and mount the EDIS unit inside the car near to the ECU.

I too would love to hear from anyone with a Twink ignition map for the Megajolt to suit and engine in moderate tune!

For those who asked, the loom is a brand new CN loom of some 20 years vintage that came with the car. I have modded it (or rather my multi talented friend has) to accept modern fuses and relays which are housed in the box above the passenger footwell. It certaintly tidies things up :)

Jon,

I dont have a map for a megajolt, but my emerald disk came with settings for a 135bhp crossflow. I dont think i would be infringing copyright if I shared the ignition map. Would it be of use to you?

Just to make us all a bit more paranoid it was petrol leaking on the starter motor that attempted to fry my elan back in 77, & thanks chaps you have helped me make my decison too, coil pack going on inner wing. :D Curly 1964 26Rrrrrrrrrrr

Hi all,
I have just picked up on this thread, I was wondering whilst reading that you do not necessarly need throttle bodies and an injection system?
I get from this that you are just replacing the distributor with the EDIS and coil packs is that right?
I would be very interested for your experiences of setting this up. Advantages / disadvantages Megasquirt vs. Emerald etc.

Kind regards
Jeff

My understanding is that they are using the EDIS system to tell a megasquirt or such where the initial firing window is and then the megasquirt delays the ignition to match the correct firing timing based on RPM. Adding a throttle position sensor, MAP sensor and such then can set the timing based on both RPM and Load. The EDIS is not controlling the actual timing of the spark, but giving the reference signal for it. Taking all but one magnet out of a Petronix ignitor ring could give a CAM signal for the Megasquirt thus giving sequential firing instead of wast spark firing (1 & 4 and 2 & 3 fire together every cycle).

In some research for work I found that Freescale is coming out with an evaluation ECU that will be more powerful than the Megasquirt. They plan to sell it for around $500 (cost) since they want to get more ECu design wins for their excellent engine control processors. My office is planning on getting one or two since it could be used for some of our projects. All of this got me thinking that it might be time to consider dumping the webers for EFI in the next few years.

Jeff,

You are correct. I have retained the dellortos and fitted a TPS.

A Megajolt (3D ignition) ECU provides the brains. I bought it direct from USA and had it built over here. I purchased the trigger wheel, crank sensor and a refurbised Ford coil pack and EDIS module from TiggerWheels.Com and had a blanking plug machined up for the dizzy.

I have fitted a FI tank from Andy Wiltshire and fitted flow and return pipes. This way I can upgrade to full FI at a furture date by fitting Jenveys, HP pump and an Emerald or similar ECU. The costs were just getting too high with all the other expense on the car to go for full FI now. I may never do it but at least I have future proofed the car.

The Megajolt comes with a base map and the car starts first turn and ticks over and revs beautifully on this set up. I am really pleased with it and, for the purists, it's fully reversible.

When the car is on the road I will get it properly mapped on a roling road.

As long as the leads are in good order You shouldn't have a fire risk from a coil pack under the carb anyway, it's all sealed and there are no sparks jumping arond as in a distributor.

I have this system on my landrover because it works when immersed in water.
