Indicator Gremlins

Hi guys,
Today my indicators stopped indicating and instead make a grinding noise (I guess a relay constantly switching?) with a glowing ignition light (happens on left and right) This is not an area of the car I've ventured into, so anyone experienced this before / have any tips?

Check your fan belt is tight and not slipping on the alternator.
I had something similar. The indicators slowed down and then you just heard a buzzing
from the flasher unit.
The cause was alternator not charging (belt slipping)

Oh, ok - would I not have a flat battery in that case? Will check it out in the morning... thanks Clive

Fan belt seems to be fine - alternator rotating and the car is obviously charging as it has started OK for last couple days (although my Battery gauge appears to have bitten the dust now... don't think that's related.)

Indicators now do nothing what-so-ever. Where is the relay? Looks like it might be one of the boxes mounted on the passenger-side wheel arch bizarrely; is this right?

Disconnect everything; adopt hand-signals.

Very good, Pete! But what would you recommend for "Hazard Warning"?

Long arms, I suppose!

Hi

If the car has hazards do they still work. if they do the the 4 bulbs should be OK or can be checked . A bulb going open circuit can make the flashers go very quick and almost seem like it is stuck on. A short can have a similar effect if this is suspected disconnect each indicator in turn 2 try and isolate it

I would suspect the flasher unit though. On my 1973 +2S 130 it is mounted on the dashboard below the tacho to the right of the Choke Pull with the hazard flasher

Hope this helps Best of Luck

Bob

The billowing smoke is usually a clue for approaching traffic.
