S1 Battery and Battery Box

Finding a battery that would fit inside the S1 battery box took awhile.

I eventually bought a 049H Varta Blue Dynamic Car Battery 12V 45Ah (Short Code: B24)(Varta DIN: 545 079 030).

It's only45AHr - but as long as the car starts that is less important than the dimensions.

Width and length fit the box - but height was too great - so I decided to build a loft extension.

Didn't need an extension on the positive because that is where my cut-out is fitted - which doesn't fit in the box - and if it did it would defeat the object of the cut-out!

NIce work on the box. For those with out the skills , the Mazda MX5 ( aka Miata ) battery will fit in the box w/o modification.

Mmmmm!

Might have been less trouble - but I was looking for a battery with (+) at front left and (-) at front right.

That's the configuration I had before - and everything on my car kind of fits that way.

Perhaps next time.

Does anyone have a photo of the battery cover in place? When I got my car the battery was just sitting on the floor; no cover, no hold downs. I moved it to the trunk.

Here's an old photo of my battery box in position behind passenger seat of my RHD.

I use a couple of very long (thin) bolts which are bolted through the two bobbins in the floor where the box is located.

I slide the box over the protruding bolts and then clamp down using large diameter washers and wing nuts.

It's a bit fiddly getting the wing nuts off - but this method works for me.

I like to have a kill switch mounted to the battery box. (Hopefully the picture shows up in this post)

Thanks for the great photos and information. Although it is not original, I think I'll leave it in the trunk I'm using a plastic boat battery box as used for outboard motors. It was bright red with a white lid; I painted black with plastic paint.
