Trying to replace wiper motor. Anyone know how to get the motor and rack out or disconnect motor from rack whilst rack is in situ?
I have undone the nut attaching the motor assembly to the bundy tube and the two bolts
fixing the motor to the support bracket and disconnected the wiring plug ( as manual ) so motor is " hanging loose ".
Can pull the motor with rack attached out about three inches maximum and it then comes to a stop.
HELP!

I think you need to loosen the wiper blades, so that they spin, then you can pull the whole thing (motor and drive) out. Once out, you can swap the drive from old motor to new.

Can be difficult to get these extract these things sometimes and always you get covered in grease!

I am rebuilding my S1 Elan, and stripped the body to soda blast it.
I took photos of the electrical and instrument panel bits to keep a record of the wiring.

I think it might be just as easy to remove the whole system and rebuild it on a bench, then you can also check the wiper boxes, and give them a lube if needed.

Also my "hooter" relay was attached to one of the wiper gearboxes, you might have the same system, so check.

Unless a PO fitted a relay for the horn, that relay on the wiper gearbox is the headlamp circuit relay - controlled by the microswitch activated by the right headlight pod. It turns off the headlamps when the pods are down, even if the light switch is left on. Pretty hard to get to when everything is installed.

Yes but the relay was made by "Clearhooters", seemingly, for many of the early cars at least.
