federal side marker light

Hello,

someone wrote in this forum regarding the wing side repeater light for the correct posision, indicating the measures.

Could any federal elans print owners do the same for the rear side marker lights? for the front it is easy becouse the federal bumpers has the hole for the light, but on the rear area no reference. Distance from the bumper and from the wheel or the corner of the body...

My car was federal but someone in the pust converted in european and now is a mix or a messe...; I am restoring the car slowly slowly in order to go back to the origina federal version, except the engine with weber carbs (more efficient!!) and the rear lights that are red/amber lens with two bulbs (tail and stop).

Thank you to everybody,

Umberto

Hello Umberto;

Photos of the LH side marker. Mine are not level with the ground. The lower RH corner meets the bumper recess about 4" back from the bumper end. Hope this helps.

Hello, Umberto, this might help:

The distance from the rear of the body to the rear edge of the lens retainer is ~20.1cm, following the bumper reveal to the vertical line from the retainer. The distance from the bumper reveal to the rear lower edge of the retainer is~2.5 cm. The distance from the bumper reveal to the front lower edge of the retainer is ~3.3cm. Measurements are approximate.

By the way, the front of the car is on jackstands so the car in relation to its surroundings is lower in the rear than it would normally be.

Best,

Just measured mine and came up with the same measurements, although mine seems to be pointed in the opposite direction? Dan

Hello and thank you for the info.

could anyone to check hot the wire of the front side marker goes through the body? In my ex-federal I don't see any holes on the nose of engine bay; may be in the past someone closed the holes by fiberglass...

any pictures are helpful as usual...

Thank you,

umberto

The front sidelight attaches to the front bumper and there is a hole in the body and bumper that the wiring feeds through. You need to remove the front bumper (1 bolt at each end and 1 in the middle) to install the sidelight. Dan

When did side marker lights become illuminated for USA cars? The build date on my S4 was Oct 68.

I am completely confused by this (being English!) My Federal S4 is a 1969
I have no side markers and Amber / Red rear lights, although these were replaced.
I have small side lights at the front at the side of amber lensed indicators.
I do have a new all red rear lens but would need another.

The question is what should I have and how should they work?

Thanks
Terry

Here's a twist to the story on federal marker lights...

I?m amazed at the variety and differences in what?s out there on parts, specifically with the front bumper. As I mentioned, not only is there the front license plate flat spot in some rarer (federal) models, apparently the side marker lights are mounted in varying positions as well. Some bumpers (non-federal) don?t have any flat mounting area for the side marker lights, thus they?re mounted above the bumper or a different marker light is mounted high over the fender arch.
What I have, again unique, is that my flat spot for the side marker light ?incorporates? the federal bumper mounting bolt hidden ?within? the marker light itself.
Is anyone familiar with this oddity?
Both my Elans are different by that 2-inch shift in the mounting. One Elan has the marker light just forward and separate of the bumper bolt and the other has the marker light rearmost and incorporates the bumper bolt within the marker light housing with a very flat head bolt. The actual fiberglass flat mounting area must then be different in the placement area for the light, thus the multiple styles and moulds for the differing bumpers.
Very Strange!
