Car Radio

PostPost by: johns » Thu Aug 30, 2012 7:30 am

Realise I am resurrecting an old topic but I have just been e-mailed info on this http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_902133_langId_-1_categoryId_165474 by Halfords. As it does not have a CD drive (but does have a USB interface and bluetooth streaming) it is not as deep (they say only 2/3 of normal) and should therefore fit easily. It also gives bluetooth phone without any additional wiring etc. The price is also down there with the unknown brand products on ebay. Realise the purists will not like the digital front etc but for many this may be a suitable option

Salut Johns

That's interesting - but I'm having trouble finding the depth dimension - as far as I know there is no standard for the depth so 2/3 DIN isn't very accurate.

Hi Vernon

According to this website http://www.sony.co.in/product/dsx-a50bt the mounting depth for this unit is 103mm which compares to the mounting depth of a Sony CD/Radio I have which is 162 and therefore supports the Halfords 2/3rds reference.

Regards

John

Salut John

Thanks - didn't think to look on the Indian site :? The depth looks good.

Seems there's also a cheaper version without Bluetooth. Can't imagine it would be possible to have a telephone conversation in an Elan or +2, but the music streaming function is interesting.

If you buy it let me/us know how it sounds.

Bad news is that it appears to only be FM/AM radio - not Digital/DAB so will be obselete pretty soon when the eventually turn off the analogue radio

True, but the Government do not seem to be pushing to keep to the original suggestion of the FM switch off in 2015 so it should be OK for a few years yet and with car manufacturers not yet standardising on fitting cars with DAB (my 2 month old Audi A6 does not have it and to get the deal I couldn't do a factory order) the car industry does not seem to be expecting it anytime soon either. Perhaps Sony will launch a version of this with DAB soon
