I can recommend the Odyssey PC680. Had one on my last two Elans, it's in it's sixth year now and has transferred to my early 911, Has only been charged up once when I accidentally left an interior light on.
Nothing but praise for them in weight and cranking power.
Best ?85 ish you will ever spend, (together with a lightweight starter),

The 2.2 Diesel Grande Espace, needs a BIG battery, so my ?100 would be way over the price of an Elan battery.

I've just replaced the Halford battery on my 1973 Elan +2s with a Motaquip VBY5 (Ah=35) which is very similar in size and hence a perfect fit. It also has the added advantage of a completly flat top which is far easier for those moments when jump leads may be needed again. Terminals are the right size, in the right place and it works fine with plenty of fast turning cranks. Just an MOT needed now and the car will be ready to use at last.

Have battery prices really gone up that much or is it just Halfords?

In a word yes. (assuming a lead/acid battery)
The blame was being put on the Chinese industrial expansion and their overwhelming need for raw materials.
The price of lead and all other metals have increased significantly.

Hi Alex, when I got my Elan it had a lawn tractor battery that was small enough to fit in the boot. It had the side bolt on terminals. After looking all over, I found that Miata supplies one for early made cars. It was a small sealed battery with the proper terminals and had a high cranking rating. It has lasted 5 years and is still doing well and I have never had to charge it. If you still need one you might try a Miata shop over there to see if they still offer it in their parts department.

I echo Steve's comments on the Odyssey 680 battery. Plenty of cranking power. compact and light weight. Colin would approve!

That's Mrs B's comfort blanket that is. She needs something to cuddle..whilst I am driving..

Everything else is packed under the ply floor. I don't use the spare wheel you see. Tyres are tubeless and I have three repair 'cans' with me.. The boot space will have only luggage therein.

Good set of jumpers are packed and I added some spare cable for throttle .... Sorted?

See you guys..

Ditto on the Odyssey PC 680. I have one on my Formula Ford running on a total loss system. Will easily crank the starter for a double race weekend of 5 sessions plus cold starts on call to pre-grid. Even better, it will not ruin the tartan if it falls over when the hold down bolt comes loose.

Dan Wise

Hey Dan, I will have you know I check my nuts regularly!...

The hold down system is OK though I made a good heavy duty item as I am aware of loose battery attacks body reports various. Don't want that eh!

When the replacement packs in I will def' have a go with the PC 680...

Many thanks for the recommendations...
