Maximum radio depth

Can anyone give me a measurement of the distance between the front of the dashboard and the front of the heater? I want to buy a period radio (and then get it modded it for FM / IPOD) but I do not know what size it needs to be without modifying the heater.

I have the dash and heater out of my Plus 2 so can't do it myself.

Thanks
Richard

Hi Richard,
When I replaced my dashboard in my 1972 S130 I decided not to refit the radio-just happen to prefer the look of a slightly less cluttered dash.
However I have measured the radio which I took out - Radiomobile Long/Medium wave model 330A.The depth of the casing is 9cm and with the heat sink on the back of the casing total depth is 10cm.
Radio supplied by a company called Vintage Wireless who have a large stock of period radios and can also undertake conversion work.

Regards

Does anyone know of people doing radio conversions in Australia. I have been looking all over the net with no luck.

Fraggle

Ring the 'Nostalgic Wireless Company' as they do conversions (Collingwood - (03) 9419 4875) or e-mail: [email protected].

Nothing on the net - I've had the same problem. These guys need to drag themselves into 2009  .

Cheers

Hi,

You need a period radio with a depth of 3.5 inches. Most are 5 inches and consequently stand proud and look crap!

3.5 inch deep radios do occasionally come up on ebay; I paid ?10 for one, which while was not the correct model, was made in the 60's and looks the part with plenty of chrome.

This was discussed at an earlier date. I used the Secret Audio radio with the radio in a separate box that I mounted behind the rear interior panel and the radio "head" was placed in the dash. It is around 1 inch in depth.

Unfortunately I believe it is only made for U.S. radio. You might want to email Secret Audio and ask if they have anything for UK.

Have just checked the depth on my 1974+2S130 and at the bottom dash front to heater is around 107mm and at the top the dash front to the heater is around 155mm. On mine the heater motor resistor has been fitted on the back of the heater reducing the depth but this could be moved I guess. look like a low depth radio is required

hope this helps

Thanks for the tip Stuart. Sending the radio off to them. New insides with a iPod adapter $550.00.

Bit excessive but it will be worth it.
