This is what I did, works great - cant remember the last time I used the second/backup fan.

Renault 25 push fans from a scrappy are enough for two Elans and are so powerfull they probably drag the car along! Fit an electronic controller in the top hose and an override switch, and oh yes, an alternator and Bob's your uncle, or Bruce is if you live in Australia.............. :D

I still have a generator, will it generate sufficient power to drive 2 fans? I'm leaning towards 2 10" tornado fans which draw 5 amps each. How do I maximize the amount of power going to the fans? Thanks. Dan

Dan,

The stock Lucas generator puts out 22 amps and much less than that at idle. I'd hope the fans won't come on at night.

Dan, you'll have to put a relay in the circuit to maximize power to the fans. If you're not up to figuring out the how the relay goes in (and I'm not either), many of the fan relay 'kits' from Summit or Jegs have good instructions with them.

The current fan already has a relay, so that's not a problem. Although I will have to figure out how to drive 2 fans from it, but I think that's straightforward. I think the problem is how much power is available at idle, which is when I need it. Dan

Dan - I found that when I most needed the fan I was at idle in traffic. I had to keep my foot on the accelerator to get the dynamo ( The big one at that) going fast enough to be of use, and that was counter productive! An alternator is the way to go especially if you want to have lights on and toot you horn at Bruce!!

All the best David. '66 SE DHC

PS I have designed and had made a twin pulley system so that the water pump has it's own belt and the alternator driven separately with a more tensioned belt. Photos available on request.

PPS I posted this on a different forum and it may just be of interest to some of you.

I have a 1966 Elan SE DHC and regularily go to Italy via being silly in the Alps. Two problems were an overhot engine especially in traffic at plus 35 or higher and a wife complaining of cooked feet!

Solution to problem one - get a Renault 25 fan from a scrappy and you have two huge fans enough for two Elans that push air from the front and mount with through the radiator fin bolts. Rubber stuck under the bonnet to seal the top gap and a cut up rubber floor mat to seal the lower gap glued in place. Also a four core radiator rebuild. An electronic controller in the top hose and an overide switch on an auxiliary panel and of course an alternator. (driven in my case by a twin pulley system so that the waterpump has its own belt and the alternator belt can then be tight - any one wanting details of this mod please contact me)

Problem two wifes hot feet. Fantastic aluminium bubblewrap type stuff available from car accessory catalogues - expensive - fitted all around the footwell under the bonnet, both vertical and horizontal surfaces, attached by stainless self tappers with built in washers. Then under the carpets on her side, front side and bottom, the rubber? sheet that cooker manufacturers use to insulate electric cooker ovens to keep the heat in!

Result - cool engine and cool wife - Bliss......!

Thanks. I did see your post, which is what made me think that the generator may be the limitation leading to my engine heating up at idle. I would be curious to see your twin pulley system. Since I have a push fan, I should have room. Please PM photos. Dan

Dan here they are - not concours as you can see!! But it does do a huge mileage and is driven in all weathers all year round! I have also enclosed a throttle cable system I have built that gives amazingly smooth and light movement, dead simple and weighs nothing. Mr Chapman would be pleased! All the best David

Intresting pics David, where did you get the double pully from? I note you have no adjustment for the water pump belt (as per a Europa) is that a Europa V belt on the water pump?
