Hi Gary,
Firstly, on older radios they're wavelengths not frequencies. In the UK we certainly still have long and medium wave transmissions although modern radios display frequencies (long wave is lower frequency than medium wave).

The long and medium wave are used for local radio stations as well as alternative (Sport, parliamentary coverage, religious broadcasts etc) broadcasts from the main stations.

These radios are valuable in the UK as they fit older cars and you can also get older radios converted to VHF.

However they are planning to turn off FM (VHF) radio soon in favour of DAB (digital) but I haven't heard any plans relating to the much older Long and Medium waves. The reason given is that it will free up useful frequency allocations, I suspect that the older wavelengths are less useful. Unfortunately they have gone for more choice of stations in the UK at the expense of sound quality.
