More ideas please folks - Your best methods found as to get at distributor to oil shaft & grease cam.

Graham, remove the distributor, service on the bench (points, condensor, oil, grease, bearing run-out check cap etc).
Replace on engine, re-time, check dwell.

Hi Gerry
Will the distributor come out with carbs in place?
It appears that there is not enough space for upward lift.
Is any special care required in removing distributor.

Graham, the distributor will come out with the carbs in place but remove the cap with the wires to ease things.
No need to loosen the clamp; just remove the clamp hold down bolt, carefully carry bolt up out of the engine compartment, then remove dist.

With the cap off can I not simply oil shaft & grease cam?

Yes, no problem. There might be a screw in the middle of the cam. Remove it and drop some oil down there. However, many times the weights' pivots rust up
and that requires removing the dist. and disassembly to get to them.
Removing the distributor with the clamp still 'clamped' to the distributor means your timing will be very close to where you were. Before removing, check the orientation of the rotor so it goes back to the same position.
