Instrument question

Stuart,

The dual gauge on my S4 was a GD1301-15C. This is 0-100 psi and 90-230 degF.

Some cars came with 0-60 psi. Unless you are running a high pressure oil pump for racing, 0-60 is better. At least 40 psi is in the upper third of the dial, not under half. And at hot idle, you don't get a heart attack looking at the needle almost against the left stop! These 0-60 gauges are hard to find.

And, of course, many temperature gauges read in degC. All of these are correct in some context.

Ebay has dual gauges on offer quite regularly. Often, they are from MGs, but the gauge doesn't know where it is residing or from where it came. See

:idea: You might have got the S1 S2 S3 style instrument which has no integrated bulb holder... it is in the clamp and the lamp is held beside the instrument :?:
This is not very practical for an S4 / Sprint because you would have to grind a side "pit" in your dashboards back... :shock: .

Here's a poor picture of the oil/water instrument insitu, taken under flash conditions with a not-so-good camera............. best I could do.

There is definitely no light housing built in to the back of the unit.
But what I have found, is an instrument light fitted to the back of the dash, between the Speedo and the oil/water guage, at about 12 o' clock.

It's recessed into the back of the dash, but doesn't cone right through ( as the photo shows).

You can identify this type of gauge by the slotted holes cut into the housing just behind the chrome bezel - they're for letting the light in from the nearby bulb.

My original 69 S4 has a bulb in the back of the gauge. It is a 110C temp & 0-60psi oil pressure unit.

That picture is identical replacement that ChrisNiel sent me years ago. They kept my original S4 instrument with integral lighting; no point in arguing with them though :roll:

Right then, better get out into the garage this weekend and see if Anna's suggestion is correct.

The other point is that the dial face is different from that shown by Oldelanman, since my water temp is in degrees C, and there's a much higher oil pressure range.

I didn't think to show the front side of my gauges. I can say that the ranges are - 0-100psi and 0-110? C.

The one on eBay would suit Paddy's 63 S1 with the temperature in ?F. For Stuart the temperature should be in ?C as the UK was officially metric by 1971.
That said, I've not seen a Smiths gauge reading N/mm? instaed of PSI.

But I have seen gauges that read in bar. And some that read both bar and psi.
