Hi all.

I'm looking for a good alarm system for my +2, which is rapidly approaching completion of a restoration.

Has anyone fitted an alarm with central locking? I've fitted a Cobra alarm to my wife's golf, and it operates the central locking from the key fob. If I could id a lock motor that'll fit the +2 that I have, then I'd like to have the same key fob operation. I have checked the Cobra alarm product range and cannot find a motor to go with the alarm - although my wife tells me that I should try looking with my eyes, so I may have missed it.

There must be a compact motor that I can get from a scrap yard that'll be operated from the output of an alarm. Anyone know of one and how to fit it?

Hi Sean
Most alarm systems will have the capability to operate central locking.
If the car does not have central locking then a couple of solenoids could be fitted into the doors to operate the locking mechanism. I had this done on a modern car a few years ago.
Your best bet is to go and talk to a local car alarm company.
One problem I had with an alarm I fitted on my Excel was that it used microwave technology and so the fibreglass did not stop the waves and protected an area around the car. Which seems OK until you wheeled the lawn mower passed or put any large metal object near it.
Although it did have the advantage that when ever anyone tried leaning over the car to put a flyer on the windscreen they got 120 decibels in their ear.

I would suggest the system out of a MK2 Golf-it functions on pneumatics via a compressor/vacuum pump and clip on actuators to each lock-best bet is if you pm me your email address,i'll take some photos tomorrow-I,ve got a bagfull of bits as spares for my daily driver.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions. I've actually found a very very cheap kit from Maplin that includes motors and the control interface for the alarm, so that's another option. I think the motors from modern cars will be the right solution in the longer term as they'll probably be better than from a kit.

Now that I think of it, the M100 elan that I used to have (before my little lad was born) had central locking - probably from another car if Lotus are consistent.
