Turnolock bulb replacement

PostPost by: ericbushby » Thu Oct 29, 2020 6:23 pm

I suspect the bulb has failed in my Philips Turnolock radio.
Please can anyone tell me how to get to it and what sort of bulb to fit, and also I suppose, where to get one.
Thanks

P1050563.JPG and
remove knob casing (2 Philips)

P1050564.JPG and
remove station display screen (2 slotted head)

P1050566.JPG and
festoon bulb about 32mm

I have not removed it, but suppose you could get to it this way.

Thankyou for that. I`ll have a go.
Eric

Later.
Right I have stripped it down as far as your last photo.
The bulb is clear and apparently in good condition. It actually is lit with 12 volts at the contacts (bench power supply) but is quite dim.
I thought it was out, but I admit that I rarely use the radio and then it is always daylight.
I cannot see how to go further without risking damage so have reassembled it as is.
I wonder if it has a 24 volt bulb fitted and I have just been confused.
However it is staying like that now and I am content that there is not a fault with it.
Thanks for your help and also Steve by PM.
Now, what`s next. There always is something.

Yes Steve, I realise that, mine`s nothing like that.
The bulb looks new, but the filament is just orange, not white. As it has the correct voltage on it, I suspect it is a 24 volt bulb and I have just never noticed. I very rarely fit the hood. It`s on now and that is the first time in about 3 years and I rarely drive in the dark so dashboard lights are not noticeable really.

Do hoods shrink when not used? I only fitted it because I was working on the frame and found that it was very tight.
I have left it on for four months to see if it returns to how it used to be. It`s coming off again this week.
That is why I thought the bulb had failed. I woudn`t have noticed normally.
Thanks

Good evening Gherit.
I was thinking about that and I would have tried to fit one.
I have LED`s fitted everywhere else except the headlamps and the ignition lamp.
The space in the Turnolock radio appears to be quite narrow and I do not think the LED type would go in, at least the ones I fitted for number plate and dash lights are thicker than a festoon bulb.
Thanks

Ok. But there are new ones that have no cooling body, with filament instead of SMDs

this one might be extremely bright, though.... and led are not dimmed as easily as conventionnal filament bulbs.

I suppose these festoons are standard size compatible, but since finding a very low brightness one may be a chalenge, maybe wrapping paper around it would do the trick if it does not heat.

Old bulbs get less bright over time, but you can also try to clean the contact (using reducing contact grease if available) in case contact resistance would add to the problem.

I can try to get the exact size of mine later today if useful...

Thanks but if you read further up, I decided that it was not worth risking damage to the dial pointer to access the bulb properly. Obviously I know it can be done.
It may have the wrong voltage bulb fitted but it is working and there appears not to be a fault, so it is not worth going any further with this. I do have the correct bulbs if needed which were removed elsewhere when I did the changes to LEDs.
Thanks for your help and suggestions
