Elan Federal S4 hazard switch

My '69 LHD Federal Elan has a Hella brand hazard switch that's mounted in a hole in the valance panel under the dash. So, it's located near my right knee when driving.

Is this a standard hazard switch from the factory? I'm wondering because it's not a Lucas part and it's not in a convenient location for emergency use. It's also not shown in the parts book.

Also, does anyone know if a new wiring harness will work with this switch, or if wiring would need to be modified to fit. I might rewire the car and wonder about this.

Your hazard switch is not standard. The Federal S4 hazard switch is a small slide switch attached to a bracket under the dash that also holds the bonnet pull as well as a push button that tests the brake fail light.

You will probably have to adapt any standard harness that you buy, to accommodate the hazard switch but it is not that difficult.

Bob,

Not wishing to contradict Naury, but I believe it was fitted to some S4's and Sprints, I have a friend with a genuine LHD Sprint 5 and it has the same switch fitted in the same location. I'll try and get photos.

my '68 Fed s4se has the slider switch underneath the dash above the parking brake, but I've also seen some cars with a 2 positions toggle switch similar to the other square ones integrated to the dash panel as a third switch in the middle of the bottom row.

Thank you for your replies. I guess Lotus made a change to the switch along the way. :? My car was built in Dec. 1969 and it doesn't have the slider switch.

Rob, thanks for the info on the Sprint.

Here is a picture of the hole in the panel where my push button Hella switch is located.

One Owner 69 Elan,

Thanks for the comment about the bracket beneath the dash. My car is a 1968 S4, when I dismantled the car, this bracket was dangling beneath the dash and bent to a funny shape. Now I know what is for.
