the distributor turns CCW, so retarding would be turning the finger CW
It can be remembered like this: engine turns CW, and as there is a gear for rotating the dizzy it turns CCW, then advance is rotating faster than it is so more CCW.

To retard a distributor you turn the body in the SAME direction as the rotor arm. The rotor then has to turn further to reach ignition point, so gets there later, or retarded.

Thanks Mark. We were in Liverpool, so not far from you, at the end of September but no time to call. Next year maybe. Texas unchanged....
