Elan Sprint relay types and purposes

PostPost by: bloodknock » Sat Jul 20, 2013 9:29 pm

Hello Gents
`71 Elan Sprint FHC
Moving in on the electrics in preparation for the return of the body shell.
On the subject of relays......
Can any one please advise what relay was used for what purpose in the original build of the car?
In my box of bits I have several 6RA Lucas relays all with different part numbers, some rear mount, some top mount.
Obviously, the relays were selected in design to suit the circuit parameters to which they are applied. Unfortunately I cannot find any Lucas Data to tell me the design parameters of the relays against their part numbers. Has anyone access to such data? If I had this I could then evaluate circuit function and loading and pick the relay that was intended for the job.
Part numbers on the relays appear to be:
33214A
33293A
33286H
Can anyone point me to on line data bases?
Regards
Bob Skerritt

I tried a google[Lucas Relay Specifications]

This one looks interesting though it doesn't seem to exactly answer your question.

And this one

Then I switched to Google[ Lucas Relay Catalogue]
I found this, which details current relays, I think.

What are you actually trying to do? Get New-Old-Stock replacements for your relays or replacing them with modern ones or what. Relays are fairly simple things for cars.. They are all 12 volt, have one actuating coil, then the contacts may be simple on/off or a changeover and there may be more than one contact set. Your wiring diagram will usually make it obvious how many contacts there are and whether they are simple on/off or switch-over.

The other significant factor is the current rating of the contacts. Only the Starter motor takes really heavy currents (the starter solenoid is a heavy duty relay). The other most heavy current is the headlights (I think). Typically 55 watts each I think though you can get 100 watt bulbs. So 100 watts would be 100/12 amps i.e about 9 amps each bulb so with two bulbs a headlamp relay should have a contact current rating of at least 18 amps.

The rest of the specifications will mostly be related to the method of mounting the relay.

I found this table on the TVR website, which might be what you wanted:

Hello Bill
I understand all of the technical stuff. What I want to do is keep the car original, so I want the correct relay in the correct appplication partnumber wise. I have stripped my relays, cleaned their contacts and checked correct functionality, reassembled and sealed them. I just want to know which went where, since for instance, the mounting formats are different, but hole spacing is the same. I know its pedantic, but I want it original.
Regards
Bob
