all of a sudden my gearbox likes to jump out of 4th gear, especially when cold, after a long warm up it seems less before I delve into a removal of the component is this likely to be linkage ( which seems a bit less direct than before) or internals ? Not an issue with other gears hot or cold

I've had this happen when lifting off the throttle. It was synchros for me, but it could be other things https://mechanicbase.com/transmission/m ... t-of-gear/

Worn synchros, worn shift forks, or simply the bolt that holds the shift fork to the shift rod has come loose.
There is no cure for Lotus, only treatment.
