Gents,
Could anyone tell me where I could purchase a Welch plug for the yoke on the front end of the prop shaft on my 68 plus 2. Mine is missing and causing annoying leak.
And is this fitted with a press or light hammer.
Regards
Jason

More to the point why is it missing? The was an issue a few years ago with some of the new sleeve yokes being sold being about 5mm longer than the original ones. This meant that there was a possibility of the welsh plug hitting the output shaft. You should check this point while removing the shaft.

The shaft seems to be sitting inside yoke correctly or certainly enough that this won’t hopefully be an issue.
But any comments welcome

It's hard to be exact from the photo but the shaft does seem to be very near to where the welsh plug should be.
What sort of oil seal is that in there? Looks like a front hub felt seal?
Cheers

Hi John
The seal is sitting behind that felt, the felt is just a ring going round the shaft, I will get better inspection once I get prop off.
Cheers

Jason,
Here is a pic of the two types of sleeve yokes. The original one is on the left, which looks the same as your's.
Cheers

John,
I see what you mean… that is an considerably difference, thanks for sharing. Hope I can get the prop out and get the plug fitted without to much trouble.
This will be part of the winter work, and hopefully remedy the pesky oil leak.
Do you know if it is possible to change the tail seal on gearbox when the prop is off?, it would need done through inspection hatch
Cheers

Jason,
Hmmm. Anything is possible but it will be very difficult. In fact one has to be very careful removing the seal with the tail housing on the box as it’s easy to crack the housing. I bought a car with that problem years ago.
Others on here may have a method of removing the seal with the box in situ?
Just removing the propshaft is not easy although the manual does say it’s possible, but this would assume a Lotus chassis, I have only worked on the propshaft with the engine and gearbox out.

Thanks John,
I may just stick with replacing the plug, I could see how it could be an awkward job. And I can imagine it would be a challenge getting the new seal back in through the inspection hatch.
Thanks for the info.

Many years ago when refitting my engine and box I inadvertently knocked the plug out by sliding the box too far into the prop shaft. I only found out when I had a major oil leak! Rather than removing the engine and box again I managed to strip the front UJ and remove the yolk through the tunnel inspection hatch.

Plugged with 30mm core plug expanded and a coating of chemical metal for good measure.
