"On the gearbox of the Elan S3 -1967 I have to replace the "synchroniser ring" rings and other parts but I don't know how to recognize the type-model of this 4-speed gearbox! and knows what the parts suppliers are asking me (either a late one or a previous one?) but which one?
Unable to answer? who can help me find which one it is? I was able to find the label attached to its end, either 2800ED6JI
Have already told me that for the previous model it remains almost impossible to find!
So if you know of any that have one let me know. THANK YOU"

I believe that is a "later gearbox".

The problem is that we have no means of telling whether the gearbox is the original. It would also help to know whether it is a Mk1 or 2 engine (which change occurred during 1967).
I suspect it will be a semi close ratio gearbox with the "nutted" mainshaft and the "early" synchronisers (which were fitted from 1966 to 1969). A good picture of the internals ie with the top cover removed should enable definitive assistance.

a quick search on the forum would point at some leads, e.g.

early left (full slots) vs. late right (partial slots)

I believe there is 1° cone angle difference between the two versions (pre Aug. 69 vs. post Aug. 69) https://www.bearingkits.co.uk/FORD-CORTINA-2000e-GEARBOX-SYNCHRO-RING-SET-LATE-TYPE-1970-onwards/657.htm (no affiliation on my part)

Hi Nic,

I've not heard that or seen evidence of a 1 degree cone angle difference in early and late 4 speed gearboxes - I understand the 5 speed gearboxes had a change of cone angle though?

Hello Alistair,

good to know, I've not checked myself but as for the 5 speed Lotus gearbox I need to source 3/4 baulk rings, and I understand I have an early version... and I will probably look into that myself this time as it had been rebuilt only 20 to 30 hours of use ago, sadly by the wrong usual suspect. Could indeed have been a wrong version if applicable, considering the number of blunders they did at the time. 1° is not much at a glance (somehow stuck in my memory is 5° vs. 6° )...

I got them from sjs to replace 4th one. Be warned that they don't fit as they come and need some of the outer protrusions reducing to fit.

Luckily I noticed not to far into putting the box back together as they prevented gear selection. Would have been nice to know before hand and did mean pulling the input assembly out twice.
