Differential fill

Drained the differential on a Series 1 Elan. Shop manual says that the refill should be 2.4 US pints. After adding that amount and removing a flexible funnel (through an access hole in the rear bulkhead) I'd say about 1/3 or more ran back out the full hole! Level now has obviously stabilized at the bottom of the fill hole. What's going on? Is the true fill amount closer to 2 US pints? Any clarification is greatly appreciated.

Well, you can't put in anymore than to the bottom of filler hole. 2.4 pints is probably for a fill of a newly rebuilt diff.
When drained, more than you would think remains in the housing. I find I use just a scosh over a quart on a drain/fill, with the car level on the lift.

Hi
On a bench fill after readjustment of preload etc I used 1 litre of oil, although the manual says 1.2 litre. I would not have used 1.2 L without tipping the diff nose down excessively.
