Gearbox Tailshaft swap

PostPost by: tonyabacus » Sun Oct 03, 2021 2:36 pm

Found a 2000e type gearbox when clearing out and wonder whether this can be modified to fit an Elan by changing the tailshaft housing, for the housing on an early Cortina or Anglia box that has the long pudding style gear lever arrangement.
Anyone done this?

Article is "gearing up for a change" For some reason copying the link to the page is taking me back to the site home page.

It is in the technical articles.

If i am understanding correctly what you are after, this may help. Read above by the van man. Saves a lot of explaining. Nice article.
Tail cases have different bearing carrier depths to accommodate the early and later bearing carrier arrangement and improved oiling of the rear bearing.

Hi Mike
Thanks for the pointer, very informative mod write up.
The query it leaves me with is the length of the tailshaft housing, clearly the 997 Anglia box and tailshaft are not suitable which leaves the question about the Cortina/Anglia 1200 box.

Does anyone have any info in that respect or does anyone have a Cortina 1200 box to measure the length of the tailshaft housing?

Yes, it can be done but a bit involved, mainly due to a modified, thicker, rear bearing carrier on later box.
Should find this post of interest.

Quaiffe data sheet covers using ‘ old style ‘ case with the later main shaft, it’s all there if you study it carefully.
