5 speed angle drive

Gents,

the speedo in my S3 with a 130/5 5 speed went dead. I suspect the angle drive has packed up, but I can‘t find any detailed information on the drive in the +2 workshop manuals. Isn‘t there any info on the angle drive in the manuals? Further more, can you guys help me out with information on the angle drive. On my Volvo 1800 S, the angle drive is connected to the gearbox speedo drive via a short section of speedo cable. Is this also the case with the Lotus gearbox (I don‘t remember the time when I assembled it.

Thank you!

Philipp

Hi Philipp. Yes there is a short section. I think it might be called the "quill".

The angle drive is connected directly to the gearbox, rear and right of the gearstick. Access is likely tricky with gearbox in situate, likely need to remove engine/gearbox to get good access.

Thank you for your input, although I will ignore the advice to pull the engine and box for now
Can anybody confirm that the size of the quill is 3x 3mm?

Philipp

I was able to access the speedometer angle drive by removing the gearbox mount and allowing it
to drop. Still difficult but easier than an engine and gearbox removal.

would you post a photo of these long channel locks when you get a chance ?

I've been postponing fiddle with the speedo cable for years now awaiting for an engine pull out which has not been justified yet, so make do with an anachronic gps speedo in the meantime.

Sorry, I think "long" is a redundant word here, as I really see channel locks as long handled pliers.
And they don't have to be as long as the one shown. It's not that far back.

thank you, I should own something reasonably close... I'll have to give it a try one day (must detach the exhaust and suspend the engine to gain fiddling room I guess, so this must be a sunny day)
