Broken rear hub bearing circlip

Having done the impossible and removed the NSR hub on the +2 :D I now find that the bearing retaining circlips on both sides have a 'ear' missing.

Thornts of this parish has kindly suggested trying to prise the one good ear out of the groove and work around with a thin bladed screwdriver

Just thought I'd check the remaining wisdom available here (couldn't see a similar issue raised before via searches)

[In case anyone's interested in hub method used, I unscrewed the nut a few turns, popped the socket back on then applied pressure via an old spinner.Then lots and lots of heat with paint stripper gun and after a few minutes began the tap the spinner a bit more and soon the hub 'cracked' and moved off the taper]

One ear out first is probably the best way to go, but...

Whether one ear or two its more than advisable to make sure the circlip is movable, say by being rusted in. Use a screwdriver or long thin drift on the good ear, to rotate the clip in the groove . Obviously tap in the direction that reduces the clip diameter, in your picture that would moving the good ear anticlockwise.

If the ali or the clip is badly corroded it will do no harm to use a flat ended drift on the face of the clip in several places to shock the bond between surfaces before trying to rotate it.

The goal being not to damage the small lip that retains the clip, I would attempt to prevent it from rotating by a means to be devised as close to the broken side as possible, then would try to act on the remaining eye so as to reduce the clip diameter just like it would do with 2 eyes and the proper tool, and being careful not to let the strength of the clip pushing on the lip. In the same spirit, I would not walk it out just by the pressure of a screwdriver but each step would press the remaining eye in (and towards the broken end) so that clearance is made for it to go out without scraping the lip. More than 2 hands may be required... good luck !

Thanks for the inputs.All gratefully received,

The (inner) offending item is currently resting in a puddle of diesel to help with freeing it up in the groove prior to an initial foray tomorrow

I would put a Screwdriver on the Square Tabs on the Circlip and give little taps so Circlip rotates in groove.
NOT on the unbroken Ear. If you break the good Ear you will have big problems.

Thanks all. Both successfully extracted after soaking in diesel and lots of tapping with a drift to loosen
Managed to slide a wallpaper scraper into the space and lever off that so very little marking of the alloy housing ensued

Bearings then tapped out ok.
