Is it possible that if you jack the car up at the front only that you could lose some of the gearbox oil through the rear seal?

Yes, if the seal is bad.

Maybe the welsh plug is lose or missing in the rear of the yoke?

I had what Joe is describing on a Plus 2. Found it laying in the chassis with the spilt oil

Even when everything is good the gearbox will leak out the rear seal. The design is just not great for oil tlightness unfortunately which is why gearboxes are not built that way anymore !!
