prop shaft flange wows

PostPost by: davidj » Thu Sep 26, 2019 2:58 pm

Afternoon,

Can someone put my mind to rest. I have discovered one of the uj holes in my prop shaft flange is worn. The uj cap just drops out! I have ordered a new flange but discovered the holes are 10mm further from the flange face than the original. If fitted, the prop shaft would be 10mm further into the gearbox. However, this would still give about 22 mm movement in the prop shaft before it bottoms, which I would think is plenty as it is a fixed diff. The shaft is slightly worn where the gearbox seals runs and the new flange has the advantage the gearbox seal would run on an clear portion.

However, I am nervous about this mod. Any gotcha's I have not thought about? The pcd etc of the new flange is the same as the old one.

Cheers,

David

Picture of the old and new flanges showing the difference in the hole position. The new flange was purchased from a reputable prop shaft manufacture as a direct replacement for my old flange.

Given my similar experience with a yoke, I'm surprised you have another 13mm to play with - giving up 10mm would have been a much tighter fit on my elan so I went with a shorter propshaft from TTR to accommodate. If you proceed, I would make sure the tailshaft doesn't rest on or push out the welch plug in the yoke, even if the yoke doesn't bottom on the tailshaft extension housing.

Thanks for the reply and I lost my nerve and have decided to use an original flange. For future reference, I found the '60's corsair propshaft, on ebay for ?35, has the same 3.25 flange and sliding shaft. Both were in good condition. ( I also gained a useful 5ft steel tube fence post! ;-) )

Cheers,

D
