Ok found the gearbox to be in tip top shape inside - checked crank runout
It is .0160? !

End float clearance should be 0.003" to 0.008". Pull off the sump and centre main bearing cap and let us know what you find. Quite possibly a thrust washer has been installed the wrong way around.

Hi John
I had a similar sound after fitting a new clutch assembly it was caused by the new clutch taking up the slave cylinder clearance. After adjustment it was ok
I should of mentioned this before you removed the engine but just read your post however you have the crank thrust to sort good luck

I know this was awhile ago but I'm having the same problem now with the knocking from the flywheel, clutch, gearbox area when in gear. Did you solve it?

The rebuilder did not have the proper thrust washer stack up - the larger tolerance caused the knocking
